Castaways is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation in the state of Kansas. It is governed by a Board of Directors that oversees policy decisions, activities and the financial affairs of the organization.
Board of Directors
The board consists of a cross section of the community including teachers, doctors, a veterinarian, and others who have the welfare of animals at the top of their priority lists. The local vets have given their blessing to the idea of Castaways. Board members are: Dr. Verdon Parham, Marcie Breiner-Merrill, Jane Brophy, Susan Courter, Virginia Crane, Marilyn Harms, Kevin Harshbarger, Tracey Harshbarger, Dr. Carol Hines, Kimble Kueser, Dr. Christy Parham-Vetter, Patty Small, Sue Stuart and Cathy Vernor.
The Shelter
Castaways has been actively searching for land in the Chanute area that is suitable for an animal shelter and sanctuary. After reviewing several locations, a site on the east side of the city has been located. Negotiations for a long-term lease are being finalized.
Other Projects
While working on the land acquisition and various events, Castaways is also busy with other activities. Some of these include:
- Writing adoption guidelines for use by the organization.
- Keeping a memory book of pets who have gone on to the shelter in the sky. This book will be a part of the new shelter.
- Publishing a newsletter to recognize donors and to keep everyone informed about Castaways. Click the newsletter tab to read the latest issue.
