Events have been a large part of Castaways’ first several years. These events have provided the organization with an opportunity to raise funds as well as awareness. The volunteers of Castaways have made dog collar covers, pet feeding stands, dog treats and many other items for sale at the annual Artists Alley event in Chanute as well as several other events. Castaways has been represented at the 2005 Chamber of Commerce Expo Day where donations were sought for a giveaway of a quilt made by Verdon Parham’s mother.
The community was invited to purchase picture slots for their pets in order to develop a Castaways calendar as a fundraiser. The calendar turned into an 18-month one due to the popularity of this idea.
The largest event for Castaways by far, though, is the annual garage sale. Former board member Cindy Magner somehow talked her mother into letting Castaways use her large yard to hold the sale during the annual citywide Chanute garage sale each year in April.
Loyal Castaways volunteers also spent a very cold December evening selling cookies during the 2005 Christmas parade in a project brought to the organization by The Chanute Tribune, which has been very supportive in writing about Castaways. Not to be outdone by adults, Royster Middle School children planned and held a pet fair that also raised funds for the shelter.
